Located in the center of Romania, in Sibiu, the ASTRA National Museum Complex is the most important ethnomuseum institution in Romania.
Conceived under the auspices of the Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and the Culture of the Romanian People – an institution founded in 1861 -, the ASTRA Museum – then the Museum of the Association – opened its first exhibition on August 19, 1905.
The museum was born from the desire of the Transylvanian Romanians to define their own ethnocultural identity, in the ethnic conglomerate of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and against the background of the cultural emancipation of all the peoples of Central and South-Eastern Europe. https://muzeulastra.ro/
